Never use the word “suggest” on the TOEFL speaking test!同學們在回答托福口說Q5常犯的錯誤之一就是會
用錯"suggest"。
Students often say: “I suggest her/him to” + 原型動詞
例如: “I suggest her/him to go.”
注意! 這是錯誤的用法!
在非常正式的情況下(寫作的時候／絕非口說英文)，你可以這樣用"suggest"~
In VERY formal situations
(written English, NOT spoken English),
the following sentence is correct:
“I suggest that she/he” + 原型動詞
例如 : “I suggest that she/he go.”
Longman字典也有列出這樣正式的用法~
The following VERY formal usage is also listed in Longman:
“I suggest that she/he should” + 原型動詞
例如 : “I suggest that she/he should go.”
Above are 2 correct ways to use “suggest” in a sentence.
However…
The TOEFL speaking test is NOT a formal WRITTEN test.
That means you should NOT use written English words like the word “suggest” in your answer.
我的意思是托福口說考的是你的英文口說能力，就是老外生活會講出來的話~
而不是文謅謅的寫作式英文~
所以，最好的答題方式是用"think"，而不是用"suggest"!
The best way to answer this part of the question is to use the simple but correct:
“I think she/he should” + 原型動詞
例如 : “I think she/he should go.”
I always say this on the test. It is impossible to get wrong, and it is 100% correct.
不會讓你用錯的字~才會讓你不被扣分! 不扣分的意思就是守住得分!
It may seem too simple to get a good score, but it’s not.
It’s correct, idiomatic English. That is what the examiners want to hear.
千萬不要認為"think"太簡單，而棄之不用!
反而"think"才是慣用的口說英文! 才是考官想要聽到的~~~
They do not want to hear strange, 100-year-old English that nobody but a non-native speaker would say. They want to hear real, modern English.
考官不想聽到很奇怪~又很古老的英文用法~他們要聽的是現代人有在講的英文~
同學們可能會感受不到~~到底用"suggest"是怎樣古老的感覺~~
我用中文來打個比方，就是好比我說 : "不好意思，我要去解手" 一樣~~這麼的古老~~
所以，"suggest" 在托福口說的考試裡是千萬不能用的!
因為考官會傻眼...心裡會想~~~天啊! 這個考生是古人嗎 > <"
這不是現代人會講的口說英文啊~~~~~
然而，"suggest"其實在我們日常生活裡~在"對話的時候"是很常用的，
注意噢! 是"對話的時候"! 這跟在托福口說答題是很不一樣的。
我們在對話的時候用"suggest"，會是用在問"對方"~~~而不是非你我的第三人~~~
這個是很大的差異!!! 請看下面的舉例~~~
Of course,
in person to person communication, we regularly say:
Person A:
“What do you suggest?”Person B:
“I suggest you go.”In this kind of situation, “suggest” is perfectly normal.
向上面這樣的對話英文用suggest~就是絕對正確的! 沒有問題!
The TOEFL is asking you to talk about someone else.
In that situation, it is unnatural to use “suggest”.
但在托福口說Q5裡，是在問你建議別人
(非你我的第三人)應該怎麼做...
所以就不能用"suggest"。
因為就會怪到爆! 古人的用法~~~~~
記得~就跟解手一樣古老~~~這樣你就不會忘記了!
下次考試時也不可能會再用錯~而被扣分了!!!
最後~我要提一下，你們在看下面的Longman字典的截圖會發現奇怪的地方~
為什麼它們說這句是口語的:"I suggest that she waits a few weeks."
注意噢! Longman是英國的字典，在這邊的suggest也有英式跟美式用法上的差異。
所以，Longman說的"I suggest that she waits a few weeks." 適用英國，而非美國。
而托福是美國的考試，所以記得就是照我上面所說的~

最後~提醒同學:
考托福/SAT/ACT/GRE/GMAT要以美國字典的內容為準~~
考雅思的同學:
如果你是在台灣考雅思，用英國或美國的字典都可以，因為在台灣有不少美國籍考官。
如果你是在英國/澳洲考雅思，就要以英式字典為準。
如果你是在美國考雅思，就要以美式字典為準。
總之~就是要看那個國家哪個國籍的考官比較多就對了......
